CAMBODIA NETWORK
WHO IS IN THE NETWORK - ACTIVITIES - NEWS - BACK

The 1998 Cambodian Population Census identified 17 different indigenous groups. Based on spoken language, the census estimated the indigenous population at about 101,000 people or 0.9 percent of the then total population of 11.4 million. Empirical research, however, suggests that the figure is most likely underestimated and could be as high as 160,000 people or 1.5 percent of Cambodia’s population.

News from the Cambodia Network

September 15, 2011 - First Cambodian Country Level Training of Trainers in Prame Commune, Preah Vihear.

Despite serious flooding which has covered the entire region, 6 trainers and 28 participants gathered together to investigate Indigenous Knowledge (IK) in their communities while developing their abilities to organize and facilitate community workshops and meetings. The training fouced specifically on the nature of IK; its value, relevance and use within local communities; and, IK tools to be used during community investigations. There was an impressive diversity amongst participants who were men and women of all ages.

The Prame Commune is made up of predominantly Kouay people. Recent rains have flooded the area requiring the evacuation of many communities. The road from Preah Vihear to the training site was completely submerged thoughout the training. The only way to access the training site was by boat. This did not stop the trainers and participants.

A second ToT training will take place from Sept 19-122 in Rathanakiri province.
